What is a training lead?

A training lead (leash) sometimes called ring-leash, slip lead, choke collar, Cesar Millan’s leash is nothing more than a piece of rope (chain) formed in the shape of a loop, which when put on the dog’s neck and pulled, will tighten causing considerable discomfort. Depending on the length, such loops can be collars or entire leashes. It is important that the leash is made of string which isn’t too thin and that it has stoppers that prevent the loops from loosening and sliding down the neck.

Before you use Cesar Millan’s leash

This type of leash is a TOOL that can only be used by experienced people. It should not be used by people who have tendency to be impatient and jerk at the leash too much. Also, children should not walk their dogs on such collars / leashes. If any of the above statements are about you, don’t use it. It will be better for your relationship with your pet and your dog’s health if you seek help from a trainer.

Ring-collar is a tool and should be used in the process of training a dog. A welltrained dog does not have to and should not be led/walked solely on such acollar.

NEVER!

Do not use these types of tools while your dog is constantly and relentlessly pulling and tightening the training collar. In this case, ask for help from aspecialist.

Rules for using the training collar (leash)

First of all, one small detail that is of great importance to whether the Cesar Millan’s collar (although he did not invent it) will work and your dog will learn quickly. How to put it on! If you are leading the dog by your left leg, then when you stand in front of the dog, the collar should form the shape of the letter P. In the video attached in this post it is explained perfectly and shown why it is so important. Also remember that the dog should always be on your left during training with such a collar.

How to put on a choke collar?

The training slip leash cannot be undone and is put on over the dog’s head. Therefore, it is important to take care of the dog’s eyes when putting it on and at all costs you should avoid situations in which the dog may become stressed. The collar should be placed high, just behind the dog’s ears. In order for it to work correctly and be safe, it must always be worn like that. It cannot hang low around the neck. If it slides down while you are walking the dog, correct it immediately! Unfortunately, this requires constant control of the position of the collar on the dog’s neck.

Collar length

The training collar, whether it’s chain or rope, should not be too long. A chain collar should go over dog’s head quite tightly so that there are only a few centimetres of slack for the work of the collar. A collar made of rope, it must have a stopper to regulate its length, but it must not be too long.

How to work with a choke collar?

If you lead your dog on a slip lead and you want to correct his behaviour, the movement of the collar should be gentle and smooth. It MUST NOT be a quick jerk. Additionally, the direction of movement of your hand should be upwards, perpendicular to the dog’s head. Do not tighten the collar to the side or back of the dog. It is very important that the pressure you exert on the dog is kept very short. It is very unpleasant for a dog when the rope tightens around his neck. Therefore, it is very important that the dog knows which of his behaviour you are correcting. For example, the dog is walking by your leg and starts to pull. At this time, you tighten the training leash, but do not release the clamp immediately when the dog brakes, but you just pull it to your leg. Thus, you make the dog feel great discomfort not only when he overtakes you, but also when he is to come to you and in the extreme case when he finally walks by your leg. This leads to further problems. In the example described here, when the dog starts to pull, you should gently and smoothly tighten the collar, and then as soon as the dog slows down, you release the leash, turn around and, if necessary, with a gentle click encourage the dog to follow you and align the stride with yours, and praise.

Is the Cesar Millan’s collar forever?

As I wrote above, such a collar should not be used on a daily basis throughout the dog’s life. It is an effective tool in the process of training a dog. It does not cause pain like a metal pinch collar, but it is also not comfortable for pets. If your dog can follow your orders while using the ring collar, but it gets confused while wearing a regular flat collar, try to put on both types of collars, attach them to two separate leashes and train so that the dog never knows which collar it being used. After some time, use only one leash and attach to different collars. After a while, the choke collar will not be needed.

Take off this type of collar when you let your dog loose or when he is playing with other dogs. It is critical for your dog’s safety in situations when it chases something and let’s say gets caught on a branch. The desire to chase or the need to return to you (while the dog’s choke collar is caught on a branch) may cause the dog to choke.
The ring collar may also be charmful to other dog’s playing with yours.

Harness and slip leash

If you want, you can combine teaching to walk on a leash with a harness and a slip collar. Then you put on both accessories at the same time and go for a walk. When your pet starts to pull, you gently use the choak collar, when the dog stops pulling, the pressure subsides and the lesson continues on the harness. You can teach any dog apart from medium to large breeds using this method. For small dog breeds, a training leash will not be ecommended. The leash for a small dog should be a regular flat leash about 140 cm long attached to a regular flat collar. Remember to keep the eash and collar light.

What kind of training leash for the dog?

As said above, the training lead should be light. Cannot be damaged and the loop it creates should expand easily and smoothly. Every time you start training, you should check that the choke is not damaged and that it is working properly. Training with the choker should not be too long. It is important that communication with the dog is clear, free from aggression, anger or jerking. Do not use the slip leash when you are impatient and get upset easily. If so, choosea flat collar and a regular leash instead. If you do not get much improvement in your dog’s behaviour, analyse what you may be doing wrong or seek more information from a verified trainer. Often, such advice, which costs around PLN 100-200 will save you time and patience. Your relationship with your dog can reach a new level.
